How to Start a Startup in the UK: Where to List, Get Press and Find Funding (2026)

A practical 2026 guide for UK founders: where to list your startup, how to pitch UK tech press, which funding schemes are open, and how to time global launches.

The UK is one of the easiest places in the world to start a company and one of the hardest places to get noticed. This guide covers the practical side: where to list your startup, how UK tech press works, which funding schemes are open, and how to fit global launch platforms around UK hours. All facts were checked on 29–30 October 2026 and link to their source. Figures from organisations about themselves are their own claims.

Disclosure: Pulltip publishes this guide and runs one of the platforms mentioned. See our sponsored content policy.

The UK in numbers (for context)

  1. UK startups raised $23.6B in venture capital in 2025, up 35% on 2024, according to Dealroom and HSBC Innovation Banking (UK innovation – 2025 review).
  2. Startup Genome's Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2026 ranks London #3 in the world, behind Silicon Valley and New York City (GSER 2026).
  3. 815,277 companies were incorporated in the year April 2025 to March 2026 (Companies House). Most of these aren't venture-style startups: Companies House registers companies "regardless of whether they go on to actively trade".

So capital and founders are both plentiful, and the competition for attention is real.

Step 1: Set up the basics once

Before you list anywhere, prepare a listing kit you can reuse: company name, one-line description, a 2–3 sentence description, sector, stage, city, year founded, founders' names and roles, a square logo, 3–5 screenshots, and your LinkedIn and X links. UK directory forms ask for almost exactly this (see below). Our guide on writing a directory listing that gets clicks covers the wording.

If you're incorporating now, note that Companies House introduced identity verification on 18 November 2025 and raised incorporation fees on 1 February 2026 (Companies House release).

Step 2: List on UK startup directories

We haven't yet checked which UK-only directories send meaningful traffic, so treat directories as credibility and discoverability, not a growth engine.

Step 3: Pitch UK and European tech press with real news

  1. UKTN (uktech.news) covers UK tech news, funding and launches.
  2. Sifted (sifted.eu) covers European startups and runs newsletters.

Journalists cover news: a product people can try, a funding round, a notable customer, or data nobody else has. Send a short pitch with the key facts, why it matters to the outlet's readers, a logo, screenshots and your contact details. Give notice before your announcement date and agree any embargo first.

Step 4: Pitch in person

  1. Founders Live London: each month, five founders pitch their idea in 99 seconds. Applications are open on its site (founderslive.com/london).
  2. London Tech Week: the 2026 edition ran 8–10 June at Olympia London (Founders Forum). Tech Nation describes it as "attracting 30,000 attendees from 128+ countries" (technation.io).
  3. Tech Nation OneToWin: 10 UK pre-Series A startups pitch live at London Tech Week, and at least one is offered a £500,000 EIS investment opportunity. Eligibility includes being a UK-headquartered B2B SaaS company, EIS-eligible, with at least £120,000 ARR. Applications for 2027 are not yet open (register interest) (technation.io/programmes/onetowin).
  4. Pre-seed programmes: London-founded Entrepreneurs First (joinef.com) and seed fund Seedcamp (seedcamp.com) are well-known starting points. Check each one's current application terms.

Step 5: Know what funding is open (and what isn't)

  1. Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS): lets your investors claim tax relief when they buy new shares. A company can raise a maximum of £250,000 through SEIS. To qualify, it must be less than 3 years old and, when shares are issued, have no more than £350,000 in gross assets and fewer than 25 full-time-equivalent employees. You can't use SEIS if you've already had EIS or VCT investment (GOV.UK: SEIS; GOV.UK: venture capital schemes). HMRC's provisional statistics show 2,430 companies raised £276m through SEIS in tax year 2024–25 (HMRC statistics).
  2. Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS): the lifetime maximum for most companies is £24 million (EIS and VCT combined) (GOV.UK).
  3. Start Up Loans (British Business Bank): borrow up to £25,000 per founder over 1–5 years at a fixed 7.5% a year (for successful applications from 6 April 2026), with no set-up fees and free business support. Businesses trading for up to 60 months can now apply (startuploans.co.uk).
  4. Innovate UK Smart Grants: closed. UKRI says Smart grants "are now closed for new applications as funding is being aligned to Innovate UK's new strategic direction" (UKRI). Check the Innovation Funding Service for competitions that are open now.

Tax schemes have detailed conditions. Read the full GOV.UK guidance or speak to an accountant before you promise investors any relief.

Step 6: Add global launch platforms, timed for UK hours

Most UK founders also launch on global boards. Product Hunt's day starts at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time (producthunt.com/launch), which is usually 8 a.m. in the UK (7 a.m. for a few weeks in March and October/November, when US and UK clocks change on different dates). Be online from breakfast until late evening. Most platforms price in US dollars.

Free routes checked on 29 Oct 2026 (full table in our best startup directories guide):

  1. Product Hunt: free; personal accounts only; don't ask people directly for upvotes.
  2. Peerlist Launchpad: free weekly launch every Monday for verified individuals; only the week's top 5 get a backlink (Peerlist FAQ).
  3. Uneed (uneed.best): free line, or $14.99 fast-track / $39.99 to choose your date (uneed.best/pricing).
  4. DevHunt: developer tools only; free page with a nofollow link, $19 to choose your week (devhunt.org/faq).
  5. Pulltip: free Local Launch; Global Launch ($15 one-time, shown as a launch price on 29 Oct 2026) promotes you across 16 markets, including the US, Canada and the UK (pricing). Pulltip is young, with a smaller community than the boards above. Submit for free.

Step 7: Keep reviews and votes honest (it's the law)

Since 6 April 2025, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 bans submitting or commissioning fake reviews and reviews that hide an incentive. Businesses that publish reviews must take reasonable steps to prevent and remove them (CMA short guide; CMA208). In July 2025, the CMA said 54 of the 100+ business websites it reviewed could be failing to comply with its guidance (GOV.UK). Don't buy reviews or votes, disclose any incentive, and ask for honest feedback.
