How to Start a Startup in Canada: Where to List, Get Press and Find Funding (2026)

A practical 2026 guide for Canadian founders: where to list your startup, how to pitch BetaKit, which funding programs are open or closed, and how to time global launches.

Canada has a deep pool of technical talent and serious government support for R&D. Its tech media is small, so every channel counts. This guide covers where to list a Canadian startup, how to pitch Canadian tech media, which funding programs exist (and which are closed), and how to plan global launches around Canadian time zones. Facts were checked on 29–30 October 2026 and link to their sources. Dollar amounts are CAD unless marked USD.

Canada in numbers (for context)

  1. Canadian VC investment totalled $8.0B across 571 deals in 2025, with capital down 6% and deal count down 12% versus 2024, according to the CVCA (CVCA Year-End 2025). Pre-seed investment matched 2024.
  2. Startup Genome's GSER 2026 ranks Toronto-Waterloo #13 in the world, up 7 places (GSER 2026).
  3. Canada had 1.37 million employer businesses in June 2026 (Statistics Canada).

Step 1: Prepare a reusable listing kit

Name, one-line pitch, short description, city and province, sector, stage, founders, a square logo, screenshots, and high-quality photos you own the rights to (media ask for license-free images). Here's how to write the description.

Step 2: Get listed in Canadian directories

WhereWhat it isEligibility / costSource
DominionDigital"The Canadian technology register": companies plus funders, grants and jobs; company reps can claim and update listingsListings require 50%+ Canadian ownership, Canadian headquarters and Canadian staffdominiondigital.ca
Tech Starts NowDirectory for Canadian tech startups, with "Startup Spotlights"Says it offers a "Free Forever Basic Listing"; paid upgrades for analytics, featured placement and leadstechstartsnow.com
PulltipPermanent business page promoted to visitors in your own country (Local Launch)Free; Global Launch $15 USD one-time adds promotion in 16 markets including Canada, the US and the UKpulltip.com/pricing

Both Canadian directories describe themselves; we haven't measured their traffic. Use them for credibility and discoverability, not as a growth engine.

Step 3: Pitch Canadian tech media (BetaKit's rules)

BetaKit is the main outlet for Canadian startup launch and funding news. Its pitch page (betakit.com/contact-us) says it:

  1. covers Canadian tech companies of every size, but "prioritizes stories of companies that have found traction";
  2. wants the key details of the news, why it matters to its audience, media assets including license-free, high-quality photos, and contact details;
  3. accepts embargoes only if BetaKit agrees before you share the information;
  4. treats messages sent through the form as on the record.

Give advance notice. BetaKit editor Doug Soltys's advice to early-stage founders, as quoted by Chris Neumann: "your biggest asset is time" (chrisneumann.com). In practice, pitch one to two weeks before launch, with something readers can try.

Step 4: Join free communities and hubs

  1. Startup Canada Communities: local chapters across the country. Taking part is "100% free", and most events are open to anyone (startupcan.ca).
  2. Innovation hubs and programs: MaRS Discovery District in Toronto (marsdd.com), Communitech in Waterloo Region (communitech.ca), DMZ at Toronto Metropolitan University (dmz.torontomu.ca), and Creative Destruction Lab for science-based ventures (creativedestructionlab.com). Each has its own intake; check current terms.
  3. Events: Web Summit Vancouver says its 2026 edition welcomed 20,235 attendees (Web Summit). Toronto Tech Week runs each spring (BetaKit).

Step 5: Funding programs: what's open and what's closed

  1. Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) tax incentive: for tax years beginning after 15 December 2024, Canadian-controlled private corporations (CCPCs) can earn an enhanced 35% investment tax credit on up to $6 million of qualified SR&ED expenditures a year, with 15% above that limit. The limit starts to shrink at $15 million of prior-year taxable capital and reaches nil at $75 million. For qualifying CCPCs, the enhanced credit on current expenditures can be refundable (CRA SR&ED ITC policy, revised 7 Oct 2026).
  2. National Research Council Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP): advice, connections and, in some cases, funding for businesses that are incorporated, for-profit and operating in Canada, with up to 500 full-time-equivalent employees, developing innovative technology-driven products. Meeting the criteria "does not guarantee NRC IRAP support or funding", and the relationship usually starts with advice before any money (NRC).
  3. BDC (Business Development Bank of Canada): the federal development bank; its BDC Capital arm is a major venture investor (bdc.ca).
  4. Start-up Visa: closed to new applications. IRCC paused the Start-Up Visa Program on 30 June 2026 and is only processing applications accepted before that date (IRCC). Don't plan a move around it until IRCC announces a replacement.

Tax credits have detailed rules. Talk to an accountant or SR&ED specialist before you count on a refund.

Step 6: Add global launch platforms (Canadian time zones)

Product Hunt's day starts at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time (producthunt.com/launch): midnight in Vancouver, 3:01 a.m. in Toronto and Montréal. Eastern founders should prepare the night before and plan the day in shifts. Free routes checked on 29 Oct 2026 (full table: best startup directories):

  1. Product Hunt: free; personal accounts only; don't ask directly for upvotes.
  2. Peerlist Launchpad: free weekly launch on Mondays for verified individuals; top 5 get a backlink (Peerlist FAQ).
  3. Uneed (uneed.best): free line; $14.99 USD fast-track; $39.99 USD to choose your date (uneed.best/pricing).
  4. DevHunt: developer tools; free page with a nofollow link; $19 USD launch (devhunt.org/faq).
  5. Pulltip: free Local Launch; Global Launch $15 USD one-time (shown as a launch price on 29 Oct 2026). A young platform with a smaller community than the boards above. Submit for free.

Selling mostly at home? Read local vs global launch. No audience yet? Start with how to launch without an audience.

Step 7: Keep reviews and votes honest

Canada's Competition Bureau warns that anyone who writes or permits reviews that give a false or misleading impression could be liable under the Competition Act. That includes employees who review their company without clearly disclosing the connection (Competition Bureau, Jan 2024). Ask your team to disclose their connection, and never pay for reviews or votes.

A 4-week Canadian plan

WeekDo this
1Build the kit; list on DominionDigital (if eligible), Tech Starts Now and Pulltip (free). Join your local Startup Canada community.
2Pitch BetaKit with your launch date and assets.
3Launch on one global platform, scheduled around Pacific Time.
4Follow up with results, look at SR&ED/NRC IRAP fit with an advisor, compare signups by source.
